  • Plan and coordinate Geological Operations for Exploration & Development well drilling in Malaysia. In collaboration with Geotechnical and Drilling teams, the office-based Operations Geologist will help to plan and execute well operations. This will include overseeing service providers and Wellsite Geologists while drilling operations are under way. The Operations Geologist will be responsible for delivering high-quality daily and final geotechnical reports and lithological logs (e.g. Composite Log) and help to ensure that daily and final geotechnical reports and lithological logs (e.g. Composite Log) and help to ensure that pre-drill well objectives are met by coordinating between the development / exploration and drilling teams.

    It will be the responsibility of the Operations Geologist to ensure that the Wellsite Geologists maintain a high standard of detailed lithological descriptions and collaborate with drilling in understanding and problem solving geotechnical related issues that are encountered while wells are being drilled, and to follow up on those issues so that lessons are learnt and recorded.

    Plan Geotechnical Well Operations

    •  Coordinate with drilling and exploration teams to ensure well objectives are clearly defined.
    •  Support evaluation of Geotechnical related services, if needed.
    • Ensure Wellsite Geologists are competent and prepared for well operations.
    •  Ensure a high level of geotechnical service performance by briefing and auditing service providers.
    • Set measurement and reporting standard.
    • Coordinate between drilling and exploration team during well operations.
    •  Supervise Wellsite Geologists in delivering high quality records of events and lithology.
    •  Frequently meet with service provider representatives to address issues with equipment and
      deliverables.
    •  Check service invoices to ensure the company is correctly charged for Mud-logging, Wireline and
      LWD/PWD services.
    • Ensure services deliverables meet pre-defined company and government requirements.

    • Follow up and close out all geotechnical issues that were encountered during well operations.
    • Prepare and finalise Geological end of well report and lithological / composite log.
    • QC and populate the RWEB database in conjunction with the wellsite geologists.
    • Initiates and implements the drafting of the composite logs.
    • Assist exploration / drilling team in preparing end of well reports.
    • Provide budgetary input regarding Mud-logging, Wireline and LWD/PWD services.
    • Mentor Wellsite Geologists and in-house staff in Geological Operations and relevant interpretive
      techniques.

    Scope:

    Oversee Geological Operations of projects within Malaysia.

    Knowledge:
    • A degree in Geology or Geophysics and knowledge of interdisciplinary geosciences.
    • A detailed understanding of drilling and related Geotechnical operations and procedures gained through extensive rig-site Geological experience.

    Experience:

    • Greater than 10 years experience in geotechnical wellsite operations and formation evaluation, gained via working as a mud-logger, LWD engineer, or Wireline Engineer, and with five of those years as a wellsite geologist or related position.
      • Previous experience of office-based Operations Geology required.
      • Previous experience with carbonate drilling and evaluation required.
      • Previous experience with Pore Pressure and Fracture Gradient prediction required.
      • Previous experience in PMCD operations and evaluation required.

    Skills:

    Attention to detail with record keeping of geotechnical well data and events.
    • Specific skills to include Pore Pressure and Fracture Gradient Prediction.
    • Strong interpersonal skills for collaborating between drilling personal, wellsite geotechnical staff,
    service providers and exploration team.
    • Ability to clearly communicate and address issues to peers, management and service providers.
    • An ability to work well in a team, combined with flexibility and adaptability are essential.
    • Excellent reporting and communication skills and an ability to express ideas and instructions clearly
    both orally and in writing are also essential.

    Working knowledge of drilling and geological operations, pore pressure predictions, logging, lithological well descriptions and record keeping, well evaluation and design, using appropriate software.
